“If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined,he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
Henry David Thoreau
Laddie and Anne found inspiration in blogs by Stephen Stewart and other overlanders.
It all started in 1947 with two Czechs and their trip from Buenos Aires to Lima in a Tatra 87 across the world’s then-highest road. Later these Czech mates traveled to the far east in two custom-built Tatra 805’s – expedition vehicles unsurpassed in their time. It would be their book “Přes Kordillery (“Across the Cordilleras”) that would fuel the imagination of an 8-year old. The Tatra 805 would become the boy’s dream vehicle.
Upon immigration to Canada, the young man’s dreams were re-ignited. In the early years it was the 1975 Land Cruiser “Jeremiah” that got us to the Yukon.
Later it would be “Basil” a 1969 Land Rover that transported us into the mountains on elusive mushroom hunts.
But now, we yearn to wander further distances for a longer duration. The quest to find the right vehicle has begun.
P.S. There’ll be another Czech mate influencing our blog. Allow us to introduce you to Josef Lada, Czech artist who created his own specific style. Some of his illustrations and caricatures will be shared in our blog.
Another Czech mate – Ondřej Sekora artist created “Ferda Mravenec” – Fred the Ant and “Beruška” – Betsy who now grace our blog.
“Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal. Typically, but not exclusively, it is accomplished with mechanized off-road capable transport (from bicycles to trucks) where the principal form of lodging is camping, often lasting for extended lengths of time (months to years) and spanning international boundaries.”
Intending to overland off the beaten path, earth x 4×4 will share our experiences and perhaps inspire so that others may attain their dreams. Join us in this “retirement” leg of our life journey.
